Boy Scout

We offer a variety of Saturday programs available to groups camping with us for the weekend and for day trippers. A few special programs are also held on Sunday. Most programs are held at Camp Wheeler Download and Camp Somers at Mt. Allamuchy Scout Reservation. Programs include scheduled classes/programs, self scheduled programs and other programs available upon request. Most programs are suitable for Cub Scouts and Webelos. A few are for Boy Scouts only. General Information for All Programs

Reservations/Questions

Call Tom at 973-765-9322 x413 to reserve your date and desired program. All programs including self scheduled programs require a phone call. Programs and dates are subject to availability of the instructor. The information on this web page is also available on a printable flyer.

Payment

Any required group registration fee must be received no later than 10 days (no reminders) from date of phone registration or the reservation will be cancelled.  Payment of any individual fees are done on day day of the program.

All checks should be made payable to: Patriots’ Path Council, BSA.

General guidelines for all programs

  • Minimum class size:  (4 except where noted)
  • Minimum charge:  Registration fee + 4 times the per person fee (except where noted)
  • Refunds: Requires notification a minimum of 14 full days prior to scheduled date.

Program Notes

Allamuchy Challenge Trail (Self-guided)

Self-guided trail which tests various Scouting skills. Group size should not exceed 12. To reserve a guide call Tom at 973-765-9322 x413. Minimum required equipment: pad, pencils, compass, Scout handbook. (Outdoors) Participation patch available - $3.

Archery (Kent Center – Indoors/Heated)

8 shooting stations – fees include all equipment and instructor. It is strongly suggested that no more than 8-12 shooters be scheduled for any one hour period. Call for available hours. $15 registration/hour + $3/shooter/hour. Shooting patch available - $3. See the flyer for dates and times.

Archery shooting for awards (Kent Center only)

Maximum class size is 8. Requires the booking of a full morning or afternoon session. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Shooting patch available - $3, an award patch is also available for $2.00

Archery range rental (Indoor)

Rental to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) – 3 hour morning (9:30 am - 12:30 pm) or afternoon session (1:30 pm - 4:30 pm - based upon availability) at Kent Center. $100 per session. Shooting patch available - $3.

Archery range rental (Outdoor)

Rental (minimum 2 hours) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) $35/hour. Fee with our instructor (when available) is $50/hour. Closed 12/1 – 4/1. Shooting patch available - $3.

BB guns (Indoor)

8 shooting stations. Fees include: indoor heated range, range officer, shooting instruction, safety talk, and all equipment. Cubs shoot for fun/or belt loop. Boy Scouts shoot for fun or merit badge. Call for available hours. Safety talk and instruction takes approximately 15 -20 minutes for new shooters. It is strongly suggested that no more than 8-12 shooters be scheduled for any one hour period. $15 registration/hour + $3/shooter/hour. Shooting patch available - $3. BB gun range rental (Indoor)

Rental (based upon availability) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2). Camp Wheeler/Kent Center 3 hour morning (9:30 am - 12:30 pm) or afternoon session (1:30 pm - 4:30 pm). $100 per session. Shooting patch available - $3.

BB gun range rental (Outdoor)

Rental (minimum 2 hours) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) $35/hour. Fee with our instructor (when available) is $50/hour. Closed 12/1 – 4/1. Shooting patch available - $3.

Bear Cub cooking & knots

Cooking, knife skills and knots. All food and supplies provided. (min. 4 & max 12) requires the booking of a full afternoon session at the Kent Center. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Call to select date. Participation patch available - $3.

Cooking on Saturday

Bear or Webelos cooking class at 3:00 pm. $15 registration per group + $4.50 per Scout.

Compass (Basic)

CompassIntroduction to the use of map & compass, and orienteering. Instruction and practice is held indoors. Each participant needs an orienteering compass with a base plate. Acceptable compasses include: Silva Starter 1‑2-3, Silva Polaris, Four Fold, Polaris Plus, Polaris, Explorer 3, or Map Compass. (Map Compass is on sale at class for $6. with 2 weeks notice. Compass course (Self-guided)

Step course to determine your pace followed by a basic compass course that requires measuring distances. Registration fee is $15 per group, free if camping. (Outdoors)

The Great Pumpkin’s Zoo Animals Hunt

Designed for Cub Scouts and families. Each team will go forth to find and count the pumpkins about the camp. Phone reservations are required and must be followed with official registration form (call Tom Stoddard 973-765-9322 x413). The registration fee is $4 per person. Payment to follow within 10 days or reservation will be cancelled. Limited to the first 50 paid registrations (adults, Cubs, siblings) per day/time. All participants receive a take home goodies. Historic site hike (Self-guided)

An easy walk/hike of about 2 miles. Walking shoes are a must and dress for the day’s weather. Registration fee is $15 per group, free if camping. (Outdoors) Participation patch available - $3.

Historic trail (Self-guided)

An easy 4 or 5 mile walk/hike back into the history of the area (both on and off the camp property). Registration fee is $20 per group, free if camping. (Outdoors) Participation patch available - $3.

Knots on Saturday

Knots class for Bears or Webelos at 3:00 pm. $15 registration per group + $3.50 per Scout.

Maple syrup making and pancake eating

Designed for Cub Scouts and families, but Boy Scouts are welcome too. Follow the process from tree tapping, sap gathering and syrup making, to pancake making and eating. Registration fee of $50 (credit given for 15 participants on day of event) must be paid in advance. Additional participant fee is $3 per adult and child. Payment must be made within 10 days of your phone reservation.. Held rain or shine. Dress for the weather. (Indoors and outdoors). No refunds for this program. Rifle range rental

Can be rented (when available) by groups having a trained instructor (proof of training must be received and be approved before a troop’s registration will be processed.). A range contract will be issued which lists specific responsibilities. All equipment is provided. $50 per hour (2 hour minimum).(Outdoors) Closed 12/1 - 4/1. Shooting patch available - $3.

Rifle range (Scheduled date)

Based upon availability of instructor.  Boy Scouts only. 8 firing ports. $65 per hour (2 hour minimum) includes range officer, instruction, and all equipment. Call to request a date/hours. The safety talk and instruction takes approximately 10-15 minutes. It is strongly suggested that no more than 8-12 shooters be scheduled for any one hour period.(Outdoors) Closed 12/1 - 4/1. Shooting patch available - $3.

Shotgun range rental

Can be rented (when available) by groups having a trained instructor (proof of training must be received and be approved before a troop's registration will be processed.). A range contract will be issued which lists specific responsibilities. All equipment and supplies are provided. The fee is $20 per box of 25 shells (3 box minimum). Guns (12 or 20 g), birds, ear/eye protection, and thrower included. (Outdoors) Closed 12/1 - 4/1.

Shotgun range (Scheduled date)

Based upon availability of instructor. Boy Scouts only The fee is $25 per box of 25 shells (3 box minimum). Includes all of the above plus an instructor. Call to request a date/hours. (Outdoors) Closed 12/1 - 4/1.

Webelos cooking skills and knots

Limit of one group (min. 4 / max 12 Cubs) per session. All materials and food provided. Requires the booking of a full afternoon session at the Kent Center. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Participation patch available - $3.
