Programs and activities for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts

Allamuchy Challenge Trail (Self-guided)

Self-guided trail which tests various Scouting skills. Group size should not exceed 12. To reserve a guide call Tom at 973-765-9322 x413. Minimum required equipment: pad, pencils, compass, Scout handbook. (Outdoors) Participation patch available - $3.00

Archery (Kent Center – Indoors/Heated)

8 shooting stations – fees include all equipment and instructor. It is strongly suggested that no more than 8-12 shooters be scheduled for any one hour period. Call for available hours. $15 registration/hour + $3/shooter/hour. Participation patch available - $3.00 See the flyer for dates and times.

Archery shooting sports pin (Kent Center only)

Maximum class size is 8. Requires the booking of a full morning or afternoon session. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Participation patch available - $3.00

Archery range rental (Indoor)

Rental to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) – 3 hour morning or afternoon session (based upon availability) at Kent Center. $90 per session. Shooting patch available - $3.00

Archery range rental (Outdoor)

Rental (minimum 2 hours) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) $30/hour. Fee with our instructor (when available) is $45/hour. Shooting patch available - $3.00

BB guns (Indoor)

8 shooting stations. Fees include: indoor heated range, range officer, shooting instruction, safety talk, and all equipment. Cubs shoot for fun/or belt loop. Boy Scouts shoot for fun or merit badge. Call for available hours. Safety talk and instruction takes approximately 15 -20 minutes for new shooters. It is strongly suggested that no more than 8-12 shooters be scheduled for any one hour period. $15 registration/hour + $3/shooter/hour. BB gun range rental (Indoor)

Rental (based upon availability) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2). Camp Wheeler/Kent Center 3 hour morning or afternoon session. $90 per session. Shooting patch available - $3.00

BB gun range rental (Outdoor)

Rental (minimum 2 hours) to qualified/trained (proof required) leaders (minimum 2) $30/hour. Fee with our instructor (when available) is $45/hour. Shooting patch available - $3.00

BB shooting sports pin

Maximum class size is 8 – requires the booking of a full morning or afternoon session at the Kent Center. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Each shooter must bring a blanket, rug, or beach towel on which to lie, sit, and kneel for the various shooting positions.

Bear Cub cooking & knots

Achievement 9 (What’s Cooking?) and Achievement 22a&b (Tying it All Up). All food and supplies provided. (min. 4 & max 12) requires the booking of a full afternoon session at the Kent Center. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Call to select date. Participation patch available - $3.00

Bear Cub knots

Achievement 22a&b (Tying it All Up). Limit of one group (min. 4 & max 12) per session at the Kent Center. $15 registration per group + $3.50 per Scout. See the flyer for dates and times.

Compass (Basic)

Introduction to the use of map & compass, and orienteering. Instruction and practice is held indoors. Each participant needs an orienteering compass with a base plate. Acceptable compasses include: Silva Starter 1‑2-3, Silva Polaris, Four Fold, Polaris Plus, Polaris, Explorer 3, or Map Compass. (Map Compass is on sale at class for $6.00 with 2 weeks notice. Compass course (Self-guided)

Step course to determine your pace followed by a basic compass course that requires measuring distances. (Outdoors)

Family Life merit badge

Introduction to badge, requirements 1, 2, & 7 completed. Scouts provided with record sheets for remaining requirements. Scouts complete badge as individuals and return with paperwork to complete the badge. Blue card required. $3 per Scout. See the flyer for dates and times.

Geocaching (Self-guided)

5 hidden “treasure” chests are yours to find by using GPS units. To reserve guide and units call Tom at 973-765-9322 x413. $100 security deposit is required for each GPS unit. (Outdoors)

The Great Pumpkin’s Creature Hunt

Designed for Cub Scouts and families, but Boy Scouts are welcome too.Each team (we suggest groups of 6-8 + 2 adults.) will go forth to find the “creatures” about the camp. Phone reservations are required and must be followed with official registration form (call Tom Stoddard 973-765-9322 x413). The registration fee is $4.00 per person. Payment to follow within 10 days or reservation will be cancelled. Limited to the first 50 paid registrations (adults, Cubs, siblings) per day/time. All participants receive a “goodie” bag to take home. (Outdoors)  See the Great Pumpkin's web page for more details.

Historic site hike (Self-guided)

A good hike for Scouts and Cubs. Tiger Cubs can complete achievement 1g and 5g. Walking shoes a must and dress for the day’s weather. To reserve a guide call Tom at 973-765-9322 x413. (Outdoors) Participation patch available - $3.00

Historic trail (Self-guided)

An easy 4 or 5 mile walk/hike back into the history of the area (both on and off the camp property). A 26 page guide book can be reserved by calling Tom at 973-765-9322 x413. Special narrated hikes may be available. Speak directly to Tom. Not recommended for younger Cub Scouts. (Outdoors) Participation patch available  - $3.00

Maple syrup making and pancake eating

Designed for Cub Scouts and families, but Boy Scouts are welcome too. Follow the process from tree tapping, sap gathering and syrup making, to pancake making and eating. Registration fee of $30.00 (credit given for 10 participants on day of event) must be paid in advance. Fee for additional participants is $3.00 per adult and child. Actual group size/payment must be made by 2 weeks prior to selected date or available space will be given to other groups. Group size: min. 10 and max 30. Held rain or shine. Dress for the weather. Rifle range rental

Can be rented (when available) by groups having a trained instructor (proof of training must be received and be approved before a troop’s registration will be processed.). A range contract will be issued which lists specific responsibilities. All equipment is provided. $35.00 per hour (2 hour minimum). (Outdoors)  Shooting patch available - $3.00

Based upon availability of instructor.  Boy Scouts only. 8 firing ports. $50 per hour (2 hour minimum) includes range officer, instruction, and all equipment. Call to request a date/hours. The safety talk and instruction takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Webelos Outdoorsman cooking and knots

Requirement 8 (cooking) and requirements 10 & 11 (knots).  Limit of one group (min. 4 / max 12 Cubs) per session. All materials and food provided. Requires the booking of a full afternoon session at the Kent Center. $30 registration per group + $9 per Scout. Participation patch available - $3.00.

Webelos Outdoorsman knots

Outdoorsman requirements 10 & 11.  Limit of one group (min. 4 / max 12 Cubs) per session at the Kent Center. $15 per registration per group + $3.50 per Scout. See the flyer for dates and times.

Wood projects

Take home a completed project. Conducted in a heated building at Winnebago Scout Reservation in Rockaway, NJ. $7 per Cub registration.

      Wolf –        Achievement 5 – “Tools for fixing & building” (birdhouse or feeder)
      Bear –        Achievement 5b – Make a birdhouse
      Webelos – Craftsman requirements 1 and 2 (2 projects using coping or jig saw)
                        Handyman option 12 – Build a stool
                        Handyman option 17 – Build a toolbox
