What's New for 2014
A sample of new things to come this summer
Wild West Adventure
This year's theme is a Wild West Adventure. Each week will have a different focus with varied crafts, sports, and activities:
New Pool Location
We are very excited to announce that all campers will take the short bus trip to the Berkeley Heights Community Pool once a week. Berkeley Heights Community Pool offers an Olympic-size swimming pool featuring two diving boards and two slides. The shallow end is 2.5 feet deep, which is perfect for the non-swimmer as well. The facility also includes a separate changing room, a full service snack bar, and an on site playground.
STEM is part of an initiative the Boy Scouts of America has taken on to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their sense of wonder about these fields through existing programs. From archery to fishing, Scouts can't help but enjoy the wide range of STEM related activities. To support this initiative, the BSA developed the Nova Awards program so that youth members have fun and receive recognition for their efforts.
Enhanced Bus Service
The bus routes and locations have been reviewed and expanded for 2014 camp season. All buses are scheduled to run each week!. We are also pleased to announce that First Student Bus Company will be providing our transportation services to camp. The buses are equipped with on board GPS navigation and each bus will have a Watchung Cub Scout Day Camp staff bus monitor to ensure the best experience for all campers.
Friday Afternoon Rodeo
Every Friday afternoon, camp transforms into the Armadillo Rodeo! The campers will experience a variety of camp wide games and activities in a fun field day environment.
Enhanced Program for Webelos!
More opportunities for working on requirements toward Webelos Activity Badges in 2014.
Newly Renovated Playground with Splash Pad
The playground features five different slides, one of which may be the tallest, steepest slide in the area. There is plenty of climbing equipment including two heavy-duty rope walls and a fantastic, tall, rock wall formation. Six big kid swings hang along the back side of this section. A full row of tunnels, caves, bouncy bridges, ladders, lookouts, drums and steering wheels make this a playground dream.
New Themed Area – O.K. Corral!
The O.K. Corral promises to be a fun western themed program area. Planned activities include "milking" cows, lassoing steers, taking a ride on the bucking bronco raceway, learning about the Native Americans and playing some cowboy games. Everyone will have a rootin' tootin' good time.
New Parent Drop Off/Pick-up Location
For those who wish to drive their son to camp, the new drop off and pick-up location will be at the Trailside Nature and Science Center parking lot. There is no Watchung Stable bus stop this summer. Parents are asked to park in the Trailside lot and walk their son down to the designated camp area where they will be greeted by a staff member. Parents must sign their son in and out of camp.
