Program Highlights

C.O.P.E.

Project C.O.P.E. is a program designed for Scouts who have been in camp for several summers and who wish to expand their program horizons.  It is open to Scouts who are at least 13 years of age and who have earned the rank of 1st Class.  Project C.O.P.E. is an extensive, weeklong program and will use much of the participating Scout’s time.  Even if a Scout has participated in Project C.O.P.E. in the past they are encouraged to sign up again this year as the dynamics of the program are constantly changing!   Scouts can sign up for Project C.O.P.E. on Sunday night at the Merit Badge Fair!

Mountain Biking

Camp Somers’ Mountain Biking program is offered daily for both Scouts and Leaders.  During this half day program Scouts will have the opportunity to learn simple bike maintenance as well as participate in a biking trek.  Bike treks will be adjusted based on the level of experience of the group.  Camp Somers’ Mountain Biking program offers treks that cater towards the beginner all the way to the experienced biker.  Scouts can sign up for this program in the camp office.

Climbing / Rappelling

At Camp Somers' Climbing/Rappelling program Scouts will have the opportunity to learn to climb and rappel safely on some of New Jersey’s most famous climbing areas.  Equipment will be provided but spaces are limited!  This is a program for older Scouts and is a great opportunity for Scouts participating in Project C.O.P.E.!

The "Iceberg"

Brownsea Island Adventure

Camp is more than just earning Merit Badges.  Camp is also about fun and trying new things!  Each afternoon, various programs will be open throughout the camp including Shooting Sports, C.O.P.E., Climbing/Rappelling, Ecology, and Scoutcraft just so Scouts can experience these program areas without having to take a Merit Badge.  Popular programs include Open Shotgun, Cooking Demonstrations, and C.O.P.E. initiative games!  Come out during the Brownsea Island Adventure and try something new!

Leave No Trace

Leave no Trace is an important set of skills for any Troop or Crew to learn!  Encourage your Scouts to take a LNT Course while at Camp!  See the 2008 Leaders' Guide for specific information!

SCUBA BSA

By far, this is one of Camp Somers' most popular programs!  Scouts will not only have the opportunity to get a “SCUBA experience” but they will also work to fulfill the requirements for SCUBA BSA.  This program is offered on two nights, Monday and Thursday, but Scouts need only to sign up for one night.  There is a small fee for this program to help pay for equipment maintenance and upkeep.  Scouts can sign up for this program in the camp office.

Dan Beard

***REVISED FOR 2008!***

Dan Beard, our first year camper program, is all new and revised for 2008!  Scouts will receive more individualized attention as well as new skills never before presented in Dan Beard!  Look in the 2007 Leaders' Guide for specific revisions and how this program will further enhance your new Scouts' experience as they transition into your Troops!

Xtreme Camper Award

This is a program designed for Scouts who believe they have done everything that Camp Somers has to offer.  To those Scouts we say, "No you haven't!"  This program is NOT for Scouts who want to earn Merit Badges but want to experience everything else Camp Somers has to offer.  Scouts earning this award must participate in events such as Mountain Biking Treks, SCUBA BSA, Snorkeling, Mile Swim, and Shooting Sports - just to name a few.  Look for the 2008 revised requirements this winter!
