CUB SCOUT CAMPING

Mt. Allamuchy and Winnebago Scout Reservation

Cub Scout Overnight Opportunities:

Cub Scouts may experience overnight activities in venues other than accredited resident camping.  There are two categories of Cub Scout Overnighters:

Council-Organized Family Camp
Council-organized family camps are overnight events involving more than one pack.  The local council provides all the elements of the outdoor experience, such as staffing, food service, housing, and program.  These are often referred to as Parent/Pal or Adventure Weekends.  Council-organized family camps should be conducted by trained leaders at sites approved by the local council.  In most cases, the youth member will be under the supervision of a parent or guardian.  In all cases, each youth participant is responsible to a specific adult.

Overnight activities involving more than one pack must be approved by the council.  Council-organized family camps must be conducted in accordance with establish standards as given in National Standards for Council-Organized Family Camping.  No. 13-408.

Pack Overnighters
These are pack-organized overnight events involving more than one family from a single pack, focused on age-appropriate Cub Scout activities and conducted at council-approved locations (Councils use Pack Overnighter Site Approval Form No 13-508).  If nonmembers (siblings) participate, the event must be structured accordingly to accommodate them.  BSA Health and Safety and Youth Protection guidelines apply.  In most cases each youth member will be under the supervision of a parent or guardian.  In all cases, each youth participant is responsible to a specific adult.

At least one adult on a pack overnighter must have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) to properly understand the importance of program intent, Youth Protection guidelines, Health and Safety guidelines, site selection, age appropriate activities, and sufficient adult participation.  Permits for campouts shall be issued locally.  Packs use the Patriots' Path Council Tour permit.

Coordinators must make reservations for Mt. Allamuchy and Winnebago using the Short Term Camping Form for that camp. (Allamuchy form available here and Winnebago form available here) You can call Donna Koenig at Mt. Allamuchy (973-347-3266) to receive a form to complete or pick one up at the service center. You may also call to confirm that the date and site you wish to have are available, but the form must be mailed, faxed or carried to camp to ensure your reservation. Facilities are rented on a "first come basis". The fee for tent camping is $5.00 per person per weekend. For cabin camping, the fee varies depending on the cabin size. The fee must be submitted with the reservation form to hold your site. At check in, a $50.00 security deposit is to be left with the campmaster. This is returned at time of check out.

Pack Overnighters are available weekends from September through the first weekend of June, (some weekends are unavailable due to events scheduled at Camp and holidays). Arrival time is between 6 and 10 PM on Friday evening, or Saturday morning after 9 AM, and you must leave by 2 PM on Sunday. If possible, all families should arrive at about the same time. The coordinator should be among the first to arrive, since families may not be permitted to setup camp until the coordinator checks the group in. A volunteer Campmaster will be present to handle check-in and assist your group with questions &/or problems. Souvenirs and snacks will be available for purchase at the Trading Post.

The facilities at Camp Allamuchy and Winnebago are rustic. Water is only available at a frost free hydrant during the winter months. Do not expect to have running water in your site. Campsites are in the woods and all gear must be carried to the sites (a 5-10 minute walk), or the weekend Campmaster will truck your gear to the site at check in. There are no provisions for pop-up campers or trailers, you must use tents.  Limited number of cabins are available for rent each weekend. Cooking may be done only with charcoal or propane. You may build wood fires in the existing fire rings, but you must secure a fire permit when you arrive at camp from the Campmaster or Ranger. Pack light. This is important; too much gear could ruin your experience.

The camps have lakes for fishing (bring your own gear). Adults will need a State Fishing license. There are trails for hiking and a campfire area if you would like to have a campfire program. On some weekends, Saturday Programs are offered, which are specifically designed for cub scouts to work on activity pins, achievements, patches and for older scouts, merit badges. Call the Mt. Allamuchy Office for more information. These courses require prior registration and a nominal fee.
